About Black & White Film

Details from My Life

Details from My Life is a series of photographs about the small finite details of life, things overlooked by most people. Photographs of four-leaf clovers, rings, a guitar, pennies, all seeming inconsequential however each very symbolic within my life. Each image references an intimate story; from a house plant that’s been passed down through my family, to a Christmas Tree representing the day my father died on December 25th, 2003. This series visually represents my feelings of longing and pain, at the loss of my father. They also provide comfort as I strive to connect with the man he was and the man I am becoming.

These images were made using a large format view camera, (4”x5”) and Black and White film. The negatives were developed, then scanned and printed digitally (archival pigment prints). The use of a large format film camera allows for incredible clarity within the image revealing the smallest details.

Large Format

A big part of where I started to truly get into shooting on film was when I started shooting large format. using a monorail 4x5 large format camera I really got into the process of photography, from loading film, to developing, and the leading factor into my jump of large format was the image quality.

Large format Photography offers a vast variety of different capabilities that are not possible with digital or 35 Millimeter film. not only does it have greater aperture capabilities allowing for more control with the depth of field. But it also allows for fontrols of the angle of depth of field. this giving you the capability to change the plane of focus to whatever you might imagine and truly inspiring me to work more with large format photography.

35 Millimeter Film

35 millimeter film was my first step into black and white photography. this was the first time I started to see light as a physical existence and fully understood the properties taking place within the camera. not only did I learn a lot about silver halide crystals in this process but I also started to learn how to print my own work in the dark room.

This became a passion of mine. running the chemicals over the paper watching it develop and controlling the exposure. experimenting with different light filters in the process to bring out the exact amount of blacks and showcase different graydashions within my work.
